ISSUED QUARTERLY—NEXT ISSUE OCTOBER

CHAIRMAN’S CRACK
Lamplugh
Parish Council Chairman’s
Crack I was re-elected as chairman of
Lamplugh Parish Council at the AGM in May 2011, I am keen to represent the Parishioners
on any issues/queries that arise in our Parish and would encourage you to
come forward with any issues.

Following the elections earlier
in the year we have two new members George Atkinson (co-opted) and Paul
Price who bring new enthusiasm and energy to the Parish Council. For those
who don’t know George and Paul they have provided background about
themselves on the following pages. If anyone has any ideas of how
we can improve the area in which you live and the services provided please
contact our clerk or any Parish Councillor. There is a public participation
slot at our meetings which we would be glad to see parishioners attend and
put forward there issues, please notify the clerk prior to meeting. I am looking forward to another
challenging year in these difficult times. John Davis Chairman. The next Parish Council meeting
is Wednesday September 21st
at 7pm in the Village hall—parishioners welcome to attend.

My wife, Joanne and I moved to Lamplugh September 2008, born in Newport,
South Wales, I’ve spent most of my life moving around the country living in
North Wales, Derbyshire and Cheshire.
We spent 18 months looking for a home all over Cumbria
and from the very first visit to Lamplugh we both fell in love with the area
and everything it had to offer. We both feel that Lamplugh is a hidden Gem.
I am 41 years old and the Sales Director for a company called Brit-Tipp
Limited, where we build Commercial Vehicle bodywork, my job takes me to the
four corners of the country and many miles are covered, however, the best bit
is coming home.
We have two German Shepherd dogs, Harry and Dylan (apologies to anyone
they’ve barked at as you walk along Asby Road),
they’re quite friendly when you get to know them.
My main hobbies are my motorbikes which I’ve been riding for 11 years,
if there are any other bikers in the Parish and you fancy a ride out one
weekend or evening then please contact me on 862424.
George
Atkinson
I am very pleased to join the Parish Council; I have lived
in Cumbria during my child hood attending Lamplugh School and then the former Ehenside School. During my youth I was involved in many
local activities such has football and rugby along with
many friends who lived in the parish. At the grand old age of 42 I am still
able to kick a football about in the West Cumbria over 35 league,
which I thoroughly enjoy. I am still very keen to stay fit and you may see me
running very slowly in and around Lamplugh.
I live in Kirkland with my wife Morag, my daughter Chelsea
who is twelve and my son Marcus who is five. Like me they all love living here
and enjoying the fells and activities in the local area, not to mention the
fantastic local community.
I have for several years considered joining the parish
council, but due to heavy work commitments have put it off, however I feel now
is the right time to play an active part and assist the council to make the
decisions that will benefit everyone within the parish and make the parish a
place people would like to visit. I am also joining the school governors at
Lamplugh school as part of my duties within the parish
council. Both my parents attended the school, my brother and two sisters and
now my own children, I have very close links and certainly hope to keep the
high standards of the school and help maintain the school development.
I am also the chairman of the Kirkland Children Playground
or in old money the playfield as it was known many years ago. This is a great
facility for families in the parish and I thoroughly enjoy working with the
committee members to ensure the playground is there for children in years to
come.
Living in Kirkland I will be happy to take any
representations to the council on behalf of the village but of course I am keen
to make an impression within the whole parish. Please take time to contact me
with any issues and I will do my very best to help.
ALERT FOR SEPTIC
TANK OWNERS Recent
Environment Agency guidance requires all owners of septic tanks and other
forms of sewerage discharge to register their tank with the agency; ‘Discharges
from septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants are mainly exempt from
the need to have an environmental permit, but they will all need
to be registered with us. Discharges to rivers and streams need to be
registered now and discharges which go into the ground must be registered
by 31 December 2011.’ Guidelines may be found at; http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/ documents/Business/Summary_guidance_for_householders.pdf We
understand that proof of registration will be required if in future you
come to sell a property with a septic tank. Registration
can be completed online under ‘At Home and Leisure’ in the Environment
agency website or contact them by phone for further details or an
application form on; 03708 506 506.
Parish Website http://www.lamplughmatters.com/
The
Website will be updated shortly, to bring it in line with the changes due to
the change of Clerk to the Parish Council and Councillors. The purpose of the
site has been modified somewhat, by directing the user to the relevant websites
for those factions who have one. This will ease advertisement of events as and
when required. Posters can still be sent for inclusion on the Home Page, but
give a couple of weeks notice please.
Those
without Websites are still welcome to send copy for inclusion on the Parish Website
as usual. Stories about Lamplugh life and characters are particularly welcome.

LAMPLUGH
SPORTS COMMITTEE
Lamplugh Sports
Day 2011
A
fun afternoon was enjoyed at Lamplugh Sports Day on Saturday 11th
June, beginning at 1.30 pm with the usual fancy dress competition. Mrs
Dickinson, Reverend Jim and Sheila had a difficult task to judge all the
excellent entries, but eventually they were able to decide on the winners.
Throughout
the afternoon more than 70 children took part in the races to score points for
the various trophies and cups awarded to the different age categories. Other
entertainment included a bouncy castle, inflatable jousting and football.
Homemade afternoon teas were served in the marquee and the Hartleys
ice cream van was also very popular.
Mrs
Dickinson and Ron and Jenny Pattinson ended the
afternoon by presenting the trophies and medals to all the happy, proud
children. The names of the winners are listed in the table overleaf. The LSC
were very pleased to be able to award a new shield this year for throwing the
cricket ball the furthest, which was kindly donated by the family of David
Bird. As in previous years, all the children who took part in the cross country
each received a medal. Fortunately the weather stayed dry, and was often sunny,
until just after the trophy and medal presentation had finished. A heavy
downpour then followed but as there was only the raffle left to draw, everyone
was able to take cover in the marquee!
The
LSC would like to thank all the volunteers who made Sports Day 2011 such a
success by helping with the following:
Also,
a very big thank-you to everyone who came along and took part in Sports Day and
made it such an enjoyable, fun afternoon for all the family.
We
hope to see everyone again at the Scarecrow Festival on Sunday 18th
September. Don’t forget to contact any LSC member if you would like to enter a
scarecrow (details of members are given in the separate Scarecrow Festival
advert). We’ll also have entry forms at the Ennerdale Show on Wednesday 31st
August (in the green and white striped LSC marquee) so alternatively please
come along and sign up there. We will be producing a map showing the locations
of all the scarecrows, so please help us make it as full as possible with
plenty of scarecrows for everyone to see!

Community
First Responders: Fortunately we have not been very busy within our community
but because of members moving we find our Team depleted by four. I therefore
ask that should anyone consider joining us please give me a ring. We
meet, for training, the first Wednesday evening every month
and are assessed by the Ambulance Service. It is rewarding to help
our fellows within the community in time of need and we are quite human!
I look forward to you joining us. Chris Abbot, Team Leader. Tel. No.

And

With
thanks to the Lamplugh S.C. Team.
Yet
another good trip out, to Ulverston this time. After
a nice run down, we hit a storm as we arrived, but after a look around the
candle factory and a snack in the cafe, the rain had stopped, opening up a
beautiful sunny day to enjoy a walk around Ulverston,
with a beverage or two to enhance the experience.
Lake Windermere was followed by
the east bank road and thence to Grasmere for a comfort stop and a short
stroll. We stopped at the Travellers
Rest Inn for a meal and further beverage, before wending our way home.
Thank
you Ladies of the committee for a lovely day out and we look forward to the
January Party.

Local comedians…… had trouble getting them back on the bus!
A grand day
out was had by one and all………….

The next venture on behalf of the parish pensioners
(th’ owd folks) will be a
fund raising effort at Ennerdale Show. Cakes and Tombola items would be
gratefully received.

LOCAL TRANSPORT
Following on from the loss of the bus service the council has, along with
the other affected parishes, met with Cumbria County
Council transport team to discuss the issue. Whilst there appears to be no
funds for a bus service paid for by CCC they are costing an option for the
parishes to pay for a reduced service. We will keep you updated of any
progress.
In the interim there are the two alternative transport schemes; Rural
Wheels and the Voluntary Car Scheme.
Both schemes require you to book the transport at least two working days
in advance of the day of travel.
Rural Wheels
This is a Cumbria County Council initiative to link you up with the bus or train, or take you the nearest town to access shops or to attend appointments.
Contact
Rural Wheels Service for further details on (01228 226721.
Voluntary
Social Car Scheme
The local coordinator can be
contacted at the Phoenix Enterprise Centre on (01946 813555.
Building work continues on the extension to the school hall,
new Key Stage 2 toilets and levelling of the playground. We hope the work will
be completed ready for the children returning to school in September.
We have had a busy summer term. Key Stage 2 went to Scarborough and York on
their residential, visiting the Sealife Centre, Jorvik Centre and Scarborough Castle. Reception and Key Stage 1 have enjoyed a
‘Viking experience’ Day at Derwentwater with a trip
on the lake in a Viking long boat and have also visited Mireside
Farm at Ennerdale. Thanks to Judith
Weston for arranging the Farm visit.
The sun shone for sports day and we had a great
afternoon! Thanks to all the parents and
families who came to cheer on the children.
The ‘Green’ team won the trophy this year.

Scarecrow Festival and Woodland Tea Party
Lamplugh Sports Committee are organising
a Scarecrow Festival
on Sunday 18th September 2011
throughout Lamplugh Parish, with refreshments being served all day
from our marquee at Low Leys Farm, Lamplugh
The more scarecrows there are the better the day will be!
So we’re looking for volunteers
to make as many scarecrows as possible. They can be fun, sophisticated, simple,
original, what-ever takes your fancy.
They can be made by individuals,
families, friends or groups and positioned in your own garden or other areas
throughout the parish, including the woodland at Low Leys Farm. So even if you
live outside the parish or in an area not easily accessible by passers-by you
can get involved as we can arrange a location for your scarecrow.
A map will be produced showing
the position of all the scarecrows so that visitors know where to look. We’ll
also ask people to vote for their favourite, just for those who like a bit of
competition!
If you’re interested in taking
part or would like any more information please contact any of the following LSC
members so that we can start getting organised:
Jane
Davis (861855, fjanedavis@btinternet.com), Alison Pagett
(861184,
Please,
please help us so that we can make this a really enjoyable day for Lamplugh and
the surrounding area.
